How Dubai Police Are Using Artificial Intelligence to Make the City Safe?

Dubai is currently one of the safest cities in the world and a lot of credit goes to its renowned Dubai Police Force. Established in 1956, the force has upped its game with the use of technologies to predict criminal activities, intercept money laundering rackets, and more. No wonder Dubai Police has gained the reputation of one of the most well-equipped and efficient police forces in the world. It has a record of emergency response time of 2 minutes and 24 seconds as of Q3 2023.

As the use cases around Artificial Intelligence (AI) are growing at a rapid pace, the Dubai Police is keeping up with the trend of deploying various AI-based use cases such as virtual autopsies, robocop-like autonomous vehicles, etc., to get an edge over violators, defaulters, suspects, and criminals. We dived into some of the technologies that are at work in the Dubai Police Force today and coming tomorrow designed to make the city friendly, safe, and secure.

Virtual Autopsy in Five Minutes

Virtual Atopsies

An autopsy is performed on a corpse when it is subjected to suspicion of suicide, murder, or others. It usually takes around five hours to complete an autopsy and subjects the dead person to the tragedy of undergoing a knife which is difficult for their families to bear at times.

Dubai Police has integrated AI-based virtual autopsy technology which scans a body much like CT scans to find any suspicious instances on the body or the internal organs. According to Khaleej Times, the virtual autopsy takes five minutes to determine whether doctors should intervene and conduct an actual autopsy and where, says Major General Ahmed Thani bin Ghalita Al Muhairi, Director at the General Department of Criminal Evidence and Criminology. The technology uses AI and forensic medicine to cut down on instances of autopsies and the duration from five hours to five minutes.

Autonomous Robot To Detect and Fine E-Scooter Violators

How Dubai Police Are Using Artificial Intelligence to Make the City Friendly, Safe & Secure?

Earlier in March this year, the Road Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police launched a 200 kg autonomous robot patrolling along the beach at Jumeirah 3. Up for the testing phase and proof of concept (POC), this robot developed by China’s robotic and technical systems provider Terminus, would spot e-scooter riders and violators.

Although it isn’t shelling out fines as of now, this could be programmed to fine violators including those driving e-scooters without helmets, or permits, underaged, or more than one person on a scooter, or riding in an unauthorized area, etc., with fines exceeding over 300 AED.

It works completely autonomously with a person on standby to mitigate during emergencies. It is equipped with 4K cameras and capable of running 8 hours on a single charge sweeping through the designated areas and alerting violators.

Dubai Police Rolls Out Autonomous Patrol Vehicles with 360° Cameras

How Dubai Police Are Using Artificial Intelligence to Make the City Friendly, Safe & Secure?

Expected to hit the roads next year, Dubai Police rolled out an autonomous patrol vehicle at the GITEX 2024. It is equipped with advanced 360° cameras and a battery that lasts up to 15 hours with an average speed of 5 to 7 kph.

The vehicle will be used to patrol around residential zones in Dubai keeping an eye on any criminal or suspicious activities. It is equipped with the latest and most advanced cameras with a 360° field of view. The vehicle uses smart technologies and AI to detect instances of recognizable faces, and criminal behavior, and read car license plates.

Moreover, the patrol vehicle has direct communication with the Command and Control Center at the General Operations Department – Dubai Police. There’s a drone built-in that can keep an eye on areas where the vehicle cannot reach. It has separate throttle, steering, and braking systems, enabling it to move sideways, forward, backward, and perform other maneuvers, and that too without making any noise.

Dubai Police Announces AI Integration With 29 Administrative Operations

Dubai-Smart-Police-Station

Earlier this year (January 2024), Dubai Police announced the integration of AI with 29 administrative operations. These integrations are aimed towards bolstering efficient systems for people to interact with Dubai Police at various touch points.

Major General Khalid Nasser Alrazooqi, Director of the General Department of AI at Dubai Police, highlighted how the police are carrying out efforts to enhance police operations using AI integration. This will ultimately prevent crime, improve customer satisfaction, enhance the Dubai community’s security and safety as well as reinforce trust in the police force in the emirate.

Lost Passport Certificates Generated Using Blockchain Technology

The Dubai Police is now using AI and blockchain technology to generate, encrypt and deliver ‘lost passport certificates’. It reduces any visitors to service centers with more than 66,413 certificates issued since 2021.

Dubai Police Smart App and Officer Amna at Work

The Dubai Police Smart App, downloaded more than 7.9 million times across platforms, now offers 70+ services and in seven languages. This should allow people of all ages and languages to use the app to interact with any of the 70 services covered. Additionally, Dubai Police’s AI named Amna, ranked as the first lieutenant officer in Dubai Police, can answer any public queries in English and Arabic languages. The AI virtual officer has held 20,000+ conversations in 2023 alone with the numbers expected to spike further.

AI-powered Accident Smart Planning and Vehicle History Records

With AI taking over major administrative operations, it will help drivers analyze accidents and generate immediate reports in case of minor accidents. That’s all without any human intervention and in a speedy process cut down from seven to four steps.

Along with it, people can use AI-integrated Vehicle History Records to scan through a potential investment in cars before closing the deal. It would give a complete picture of the vehicle in question including its mechanical condition and accident history to make a well-informed decision.

Smart Police Station (SPS)

Dubai Police SPS

Dubai Police has set up 25 SPS as an interactive self-service police station that functions like a traditional police station providing services including requests for permits and certificates, registering criminal reports, delivery of materials found, etc. Currently, SPSs offer 46 services requiring no human intervention and 24 hours of availability. As per the official states, in 2023, SPSs served 121,986 visitors, a 13% increase from 107,719 visitors recorded in 2022.
